When in Quito and looking to volunteer, consider Ecotrackers.
Ecotrackers is a non-profit organization that works directly with students and volunteers from all over the world to develop
intelligent tourism and to preserve the biodiversity and cultural diversity of Ecuador. Ecotrackers has worked to improve the adverse conditions that afflict many communities throughout the country since August of 2001.
Ecotrackers works primarily with Indigenous, Mestizo, and African-Latino communities that are situated near national parks and other publicly protected areas. They work alongside other organizations, both governmental and non-governmental, with similar goals to assist people of any gender or age who face the destruction of nature, the extinction of cultures, and the many other problems that confront many Ecuadorian communities.
Another option is :
The FBU is non profit NGO and has worked for over 50 years in rural development in Ecuador. With its strong community links, the FBU offers the opportunity for volunteers to live and work with families in rural Andean communities.
This is a great opportunity to live and learn the diverse Ecuadorian cultures, as well as subjects such as agro-ecology (incorporating organic farming and sustainable natural resource management), reforestation, animal management and of course, Spanish!
We run three basic programs that need little or no experience, though through our contacts can tailor volunteer stays according to their skills:
Organic agriculture program based at our hacienda 1.5 hours north east of Quito. No experience is necessary and though Spanish would be helpful, it is not essential.
- Cultural exchange program: based in a rural community where volunteers work alongside their host family to understand the daily rhythm and culture of rural life in Ecuador. Basic Spanish required.
- Teaching program: based in a rural community where volunteers will help in the local schools taking classes of up to 20 children of multiple ages and in various subjects. An exciting challenge for anyone! You will need to have basic+ conversational Spanish.
